[Associated Press] Expect More of NATO in the Arctic

The NATO committee closed on Sunday afternoon with their communiqué and draft resolutions amended.  The delegates found common ground in partnership, expanding their presence in the Arctic.

Albania

Albania led with a controversial take: proposing a subpoint to have an open dialogue on reinstating Russian membership in UNCLOS.

“Albania wants negotiation with Russia and this UN body seems relevant…using a UN institution to ensure smooth sailing between Russia and NATO to prevent further escalation.”

The subpoint was objected to. The Albanian delegate did get a win through having the Balkans added to being representatives in Arctic Sentry with the inclusion of Baltic Sentry.

The United States of America

The U.S. stays strong in its Arctic governance. A proposed amendment called for U.S. military bases in the Arctic to change into NATO military bases, but failed due to the U.S. objecting it.

Russia & China

Tension was palpable in the room as Albania and the UK pushed for communication with Russia regarding a “shady” alliance. It was also reported that three Chinese submarines were spotted near northern Alaska; there have been no updates.

The committee celebrated their completion with overall satisfaction in keeping distance with Russia and China.
