“Make Maastricht University Great Again”
This year, the elections for the University and faculty Councils took place between the 19th and the 22nd of May. For the past couple of days, you probably were unable to avoid being stopped in front of your faculty or the library by a handful of students asking you if you had voted already. And between various friendly interactions throughout Maastricht, such as football parties with air balloons between opposing candidates, and shared pitches in front of the Inner Center Library, the candidates have been working their hardest to get you to vote for them. But rest assured, election season is now over, the votes have been cast, and the results are out.
The University Council is the representative body of the University, composed of ten elected students and ten elected staff members. They have a right to consent and advise the executive board on various new policy development, as well as have a right to information and initiative, allowing them to force the decision-making to be more transparent, and their ideas to be pushed forward.
This year, 6 parties ran for election to the University Council. The running parties included, in order of the lists: LijstvoorNederland, List Lex-Motus, MRSP DOPE, NovUM, Voxis, and KAN. With the two independents this year- LisjtvoorNederland and Voxis- and the four already established parties currently standing at the University Council, the election had a total of 45 candidates running for 10 seats. If you still want to know what they stand for, or get to know some of the representatives, the Maastricht Diplomats’ University Council debate, welcoming four candidates from four parties who responded to our offer to come, is still available online. And obviously, we can not forget the election paper offered by the Observant. On top of their University Council list, the parties also ran for elections within the Faculty Council, with each party running in various faculties.
And it is now official, the results were announced today at 15:00 at Ad Fundum of SBE. Between drinks and some starters, a speech was given. The University reminded the candidates of the code of conduct to follow, with two clear violations having happened, though they did not expand on what exactly transpired. A personal favorite was the thanks given to the Maastricht Diplomat for the organization of the debate. And we could not avoid the Americanising of the election, with the speech acknowledging the rise in participation with a jab at the current politics: “Make Maastricht University Great Again”. Let’s dive into the results!
