Viktor Orban has continuously shown to be an outstanding and reliable partner for the People's Republic of China. However, to the Republic’s surprise, Hungary is not the only EU country that is proving to warm up to the great Asian nation. Spain, in an unexpected alliance with Hungary, has emerged as another European country that is apparently now open to more negotiations with China.
In an official interview with the Prime Ministers of Spain and Hungary, Pedro Sanchez and Viktor Orbán, the two were eager to express their newly found friendship and the most beneficial path for the EU going forward.
In the committee, Hungary has “advocated for closer relations with China” and continuously supported the One China policy and has gone so far to call China an “iron clawed friend”.
During the interview, Hungary’s Prime Minister stated how Spain will “back up Hungary and stand behind Vikor Orban and strike out every human rights clause.” A very confident claim that we have yet to see will come to fruition.
Spain made a comment that while they will continue to support existing human rights agreements between the EU and China, they will not support any new ones. A small step for what the People’s Republic hopes to grow with time.
These ongoings make it clear how there is a growing sentiment that the best way for Europe is to get closer with China. Especially now that the U.S. is an unpredictable partner, it is time for the EU to turn to other, more productive alternatives.
