[Associated Press] UNHSC- P5 reaches agreement in Rwanda conflict

The P5 have imposed a 24 hour deadline for Rwanda and other involved parties to come to an agreement regarding the UNAMIR. This comes after a short caucus between the 5 powerful states to speed up negotiations regarding the ongoing Rwanda crisis. They stress that the deadline is imposed only to protect human life and to bring an end to suffering, without interference of national interests.

France further wants to continue its individual mission to Rwanda due to its “deep understanding of the Rwandan history and state”. They propose to work together with the Organization of African Unity in a secondary military mission that would have the approval of the UN. The presidency of the council is wary of this French mission, since there is a risk of it overshadowing the UNAMIR mission. The French delegate continues to stress that this would be a UN mission, not a French mission.

In other developments, Rwanda has stated that the maximum foreign troop count it will accept is 4-6 thousand troops.
