Concluding a four-day summit, the European Parliament (EP) has adopted a regulation “on Safeguarding the Integrity of Elections and Media Against Foreign Interference and Disinformation”. It aims to protect EU elections from foreign interference, pointing to recent evidence of Russian meddling through disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, and manipulation on social media.
The key provisions include transparency measures for political financing, improved cybersecurity, national media literacy programs, and non-compliance penalties. The regulation will be enforced starting the next EU election cycle, in January 2026.
