Chaos has descended upon Catholicism as the faithful mourn the untimely death of their Holy Father. His Holiness’ lifeless body was discovered in the early morning hours, a tragedy most unexpected and with dire consequences. Amid ongoing bloodshed between the Catholics and Huguenots, suspicious voices circulate murder allegations but are cautious to speculate about the cause of the Pope’s death.
“The way the Church now moves forward will really depend on the new Pope,” a high-ranking Cardinal confided in Agence Presse France, his eyes clouded with bereavement. As they grapple with the loss of their leader, the leaders of the Catholic Church present a strong front, offering no insights into their intentions to the outside world.
As the Huguenots remain silent, one cannot help but wonder if perhaps, in itself this is a sign of complicity. For, as enemies of the Catholic Church, should they not be celebrating the pontiff’s death? Or might the news perhaps have reached their ears even before the Catholics themselves discovered the tragedy? We dare not say.
In these dark hours of grief, Europe holds its breath as only God knows the truth.
