At this year’s EuroMUN simulation, the significant advancements, as well as for the environment that the European Parliament’s chairs have created, is unmatched. As a beginner committee, many delegates came on Friday still learning and getting familiar with the rules of procedure. However, after just a few days, they have clearly improved, thanks to their chairs, who have gone beyond to mentor them.
Indeed, they combine a fantastic sense of humor with efficiency and fairness. Whether providing a siesta break, playing music during downtime, or sharing giggles over meme reviews, they help create an environment where delegates feel at ease learning and engaging. Similarly, they ensure the procedure is respected and the committee’s work moves forward smoothly.
It’s been impressive to watch how much the delegates developed their debating skills, confidence, and teamwork in such a short time. As the chairs explained: "Delegates stick to their parties' ideas, remain kind to each other, and show a common understanding, but still stand up for controversial aspects of law and politics. They were even a bit too nice between parties, we maybe could have expected more fights between left and right." Furthermore, the chairs elaborated on the difficulty of being an EP delegate, noting that it is a political committee, not a diplomatic one, which makes it even more difficult to approach.
The European Parliament’s balance of fun and focus is a great example of how beginner committees can thrive.
