[The Continent] African Nations Split on Regulating MNC’s

On Saturday morning, SPECPOL representatives engaged in more concrete discussions regarding possible screening mechanisms for multinational corporations (MNC’s) to support transparency.

The delegation of Cameroon, Chad, and Ethiopia champions this conversation. Notably, Cameroon addresses some of the possible concerns of these mechanisms for African nations that want to remain attractive to MNC’s, reassuring that these measures would aim for neutral and fair cooperation and should not deter these corporations, who aim to meet the conditions of any good partnership.

The African nations are divided: protect national interests or the private sector? Tanzania and Niger express concerns. Cameroon rebuttals. Some usually chatty nations are refraining from contributing; your silence is noted.
