This morning, the ICC in the Hague administered the case against Tony Blair, for his role in facilitating various human rights violations against Iraqi civilians during the occupation of Iraq by the U.S.-UK coalition.
Defense and prosecution have provided opening statements; the prosecution seeking to bring Blair to justice for war atrocities and the defense to distinguish Blair’s role from individual-soldier responsibility. As the case unravels, the results and decision of this case hold vital importance to the notion of Western impunity in the international-legal sphere, as well as whose suffering is seen as legitimate.
