Friday afternoon, FUNSC stripped China of its voting power. This was made possible by Article 27(3) of the UN Charter which requires a party to a dispute to abstain from voting.
The motion was proposed by Taiwan as states feared that Russia and China would veto every SC attempt to draft a resolution.
Beijing's response was immediate: economic threats against the supporting states; setting the tone for a tense morning of unmoderated caucus exchanges between China and the nine delegations that had voted in favor of Article 27(3).
