Members of the African Union (AU) on Friday agreed on the importance of cooperation and unity as well as the need for a cap on national debts accumulated through China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). However, disputes emerged over where to set the threshold. While Rwanda proposed to align the quota with European guidelines at about 60 percent of the national gross domestic product, delegations including small island state Sao Tome argued that their national economy is not comparable to European counterpart and called to significantly lower the percentage.
